Upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1

I am looking at upgrading from 4.0 sp4 patch 9 to 4.1

if download and run anything like SBOP BI Platform Servers 4.1 SP02 Patch5 - Update  i get an error that i don't have the correct version of bi platform installed. What do i have to download to update from 4.0 to 4.1.

should i download and install

SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform Servers 4.1 SP02 - Update  (just the Update without a patch)

and then add patches?

I am assuming that as long as i don't need the added functionality provided I can skip the steps below correct?

the main feature we are looking to add is smart view from  BI4.0 SP05 and i just want to make sure that will be avialable without having to remove the origional install.
